Printing to lprng Printers from Windows XP
The first step is to install LPR printing on Windows XP:
Open Control Panel
(If you're using the Classic style Start Menu, from the Start Menu, select Settings then Control Panel)
(If you're using the Windows XP style Start Menu, you can access Control Panel directly from the Start Menu)
In Control Panel, select Add or Remove Programs
When Add or Remove Programs appears, select Add/Remove Windows Components in the left pane.
When the Windows Components Wizard appears, scroll down and check the box labelled Other Network File and Print Services
Click Next to begin the installation
Click Finish when the installation is done
Setting up the LPR printer:
From Control Panel, select the Prints and Faxes widget
On the left, select Add a printer
When the Add Printer Wizard appears, click Next
On the next screen, select Local printer attached to this computer
(I know this is strange, but it's how Windows does it.)
Uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer and click the Next button
When the Select a Printer Port window appears, select Create a new port, select LPR Port from the drop-down, then click the Next button
In the Add LRP compatible printer dialog, enter the IP address (or name) of the Linux box you're printing to and the name of the queue to which you'd like to print then click OK
Since Windows cannot automagically load the printer driver, you'll need to manually select the Manufacturer and Model when the dialog appears and click the Finish button
That should do it. You should now be able to print to your lprng printer from Windows. Neato, huh?
